Enchanted Rock

State Natural Area in Texas

While staying at Meyer Bed and Breakfast on Cypress Creek, be sure to drive out to the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area to view the spectacular rock formations.  Just 45 miles north of Meyer’s Comfort Texas location, the drive takes less than an hour and is well worth visiting.

Enchanted Rock is one of the largest underground rock formations uncovered by erosion in the United States.  Called a batholith, this pink granite dome covers 640 acres.

Local lore says that the Tonkawa Indians saw ‘ghost fires’ flickering at the top and that it made loud noises.  Legend states that the Tonkawa watched a “pale man” escape from their camp running towards the rock and he was swallowed by the rock.  Amazingly, he returned and because of this, they embraced him as one of their own and viewed Enchanted Rock as mystical.

Scientists attribute the loud noises as the rocks cracking and settling due to heat.  The dome is the second largest granite monadnock, or isolated hill or ridge rising out of the level plains, in the United States.

In 1970, Enchanted Rock was designated a National Historic Landmark and in 1984 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
